Cannabinoid Profile (Potency Test)

A complete cannabinoid profile will help a patient determine the potency and medicinal benefits provided by their cannabis. PSI Labs can accurately test for the major cannabinoids (THC, CBD and CBN), as well as many of the minor cannabinoids (THCV, CBG, CBC, THCA and CBDA).

What are Cannabinoids?

The endocannabinoid system is a crucial physiologic system necessary for establishing and maintaining human health. Endocannabinoids and their receptors cover the entire body. Phytocannabinoids (cannabinoids found in cannabis, and other plants) stimulate the body’s cannabinoid receptors, and affect the mind and body in a number of different ways. They are among the active ingredients that contribute many of the medicinal properties of cannabis.

Terpene Profile

A more informed cannabis patient or cultivator may be interested in the unique terpene profile of different medicines and its relation to the flavors and effects of the particular strain of cannabis. PSI Labs’ state of the art GC/MS is fully equipped to run full terpene profiles to accurately test for terpenes including, but not limited to Limonene, α-Pinene, β-Pinene, β-Myrcene, β-Caryophyllene and Linalool.

What are Terpenes?

Terpenes are the chemical compounds responsible for giving cannabis its flavor and unique aroma. Like cannabinoids, research has shown that terpenoids have medicinal properties. The synergistic combination of terpenes and cannabinoids create an “entourage effect,” meaning that use of the entire plant is more medically beneficial than any one cannabinoid or terpene in isolation.

Residual Solvent Screening

Cannabis-infused products constitute an ever-growing portion of the retail cannabis marketplace. Patients who use concentrates and extracts must be able to know that their medicine is safe, and free from residual solvents. Volatile chemicals like butane, propane and hexane are examples of solvents used in the chemical extraction process. If an extraction is not expertly carried out, residual solvents may remain in a patient’s medicine.

Using a headspace sampler paired with a mass spectrometer, PSI Labs can accurately detect trace levels of volatile compounds used in various extraction methods.

Foreign Matter Screening Inspection Utilizing Microscope with Imaging System

PSI Labs will visually screen for foreign matter, pests as well as obvious mold, fungus and mildew infestations as part of our rigorous sample documentation procedure. PSI Labs will also provide attractive, high-magnification images for clients to use in advertising/cataloging.

Microbiological Screening utilizing Plate Enumeration and qPCR

As with residual solvent and pesticide residue analyses, a microbiological examination is a crucial component of a full safety compliance screen. Cannabis is vulnerable to fungi and bacterial diseases; its growing conditions are often ideal environments for microbial growth.

PSI Labs uses plate enumeration and qPCR to accurately determine the total amount of microbiological contamination present on a sample of cannabis. A “passing” microbiological examination verifies the sample is safe for human consumption. As mandated by the MMFLA, PSI Labs will screen for the following:

  • Total viable aerobic bacteria
  • Total Yeast and mold
  • Total Coliforms
  • Bile Tolerant gram-negative bacteria
  • E. coli (pathogenic strains) and Salmonella spp.
  • Aspergillus flavus
  • Aspergillus fumigatus
  • Aspergillus niger
  • Aspergillus terreus

Pesticide Residue Analysis

Cannabis may contain pesticide residues in significant amounts. Due to the extraction process, cannabis-infused products may contain even higher amounts. In order to accurately screen for pesticide residue, PSI Labs will isolate, separate, identify, and quantify a large number of chemical compounds at extremely low concentrations.

Water Activity

Measuring the water activity in a cannabis product is an important way to demonstrate a product’s susceptibility to microbial contamination. The higher the measured water activity, the more freely water can be used by microbes as a food source or to support chemical and enzymatic reactions leading to spoilage.

Heavy Metals Screening

As mandated by the MMFLA, PSI Labs will screen for the following metals using sophisticated methodology and extraction procedures, along with an inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometer (ICP-MS):

  • Lead
  • Arsenic
  • Mercury
  • Cadmium
  • Chromium

Consultation services may range from preventing pestilence in the initial grow phase, streamlining edible production (accurately marking and measuring doses of activated THC in cannabis-infused products), determining cannabinoid ratios in clones, to specialized breeder services.
